Today I would like to introduce people to the city of my birth, Coventry in the West Midlands of England.
Coventry is a large city of some 300 thousand people, a bit larger than Ljubljana (Slovenia) and a bit smaller than Maringá (Brazil). It is the 9th largest city in England, and is often known as the City in Shakespeare Country. This is because of its location - officially in England a place is only a city if it has a cathedral, and by this definition Coventry is the nearest city to Stratford-upon-Avon where the Bard was born. Coventry lies on the edge of the West Midlands conurbation, and this means that three miles outside the city you can be in rolling countryside.
Once the hub of the British motor industry, Coventry now lives off service provision and some small technology companies. Memories live on, however, at the Coventry Road Transport Museum, in the heart of town.
There is a lot for tourists to see. The Cathedral Ruins are a poignant reminder of the Second World War and the Coventry Blitz and are now a monument to peace and reconciliation. The Godiva Statue in Broadgate is in honour of Lady Godiva who once rode naked through the town to protest against taxation. And then there is the War Memorial Park, perfect for picnics and family fun.
HOW TO GET THERE: By train, the cheapest way from London is Midland Trains via Northampton (sometimes with a change, sometimes not). There are services about every 30 minutes from London Euston. By air, fly into Birmingham International, then take a short monorail trip to the local station and then there are frequent trains into Coventry. From the station, take the 27 bus into town.

Hoje gostaria de apresentar a cidade onde nasci, Coventry, que fica no condado de West Midlands na Inglaterra.
Coventry é uma cidade grande com mais ou menos 300 mil pessoas, um pouco maior que Ljubljana (Eslovênia) e um pouco menor que Maringá (Brasil). É a nona maior cidade na Inglaterra, e costuma ser conhecida como a Cidade na Terra do Shakespeare, isso por causa da sua localização - na Inglaterra, oficialmente um lugar só é uma cidade se tiver uma catedral, e de fato, segundo esta definição a cidade de Coventry é a mais próxima de Stratford, onde o Bardo nasceu. A cidade fica na borda da conurbação de West Midlands, e isso significa que a apenas cinco quilômetros da cidade você poderá estar no interiorzão do país.
A cidade antigamente era o centro da indústria automobilística mas hoje vive de serviços e algumas pequenas empresas de tecnologia. As lembranças vivem, no entanto, no Museu de Transporte Rodoviário, no coração da cidade.
Há muitas atrações para os turistas. As Ruínas da Catedral são uma lembrança comovente da Segunda Guerra Mundial e da Coventry Blitz, mas hoje são um monumento à paz e à reconciliação. A Estátua de Godiva em Broadgate faz uma homenagem à Lady Godiva que uma vez cavalgou nua pela cidade para protestar contra os impostos. Depois há o Parque Memorial da Guerra, perfeito para um piquenique e lazer em família.
COMO CHEGAR: De trem, a forma mais barata partindo de Londres é pela Midland Trains via Northampton (às vezes com baldeação, outras vezes não). Há serviços a cada 30 minutos, saindo de London Euston. De avião, chegue em Birmingham International, depois pegue o monotrilho até a estação local, e há serviço freqüente de trens para Coventry. Da estação, pegar o ônibus 27 até o centro.
