Football Language / Jargão Futebolístico

As the World Cup draws near, I would like to take this opportunity to have a brief look at the quaint language used in football. Indeed, reading the sports news in English newspapers is like going through a dictionary, so colourful and intense is the language used. Things like “Arsenal drew level in the dying embers of the game” are so descriptive that you can almost see the action in front of your very eyes. In Brazil, the newspapers do not live up to that standard, although in bygone days the radio broadcasts of Mário Vianna on Rádio Globo of Rio de Janeiro made a good attempt with words like “banheira” (literally a bathtub) which he used for “offside”, and “soprador de apito” ( a whistle-blower) for a referee with poor performance.

Real gems from English newspapers and sites include things like “They won by the odd goal in five” for a win by three goals to two, and “Neymar shot a rocket in the top corner of the net”.

Mine is just a basic list, and has been compiled myself, without reference to any source. However, a more comprehensive list is available on the excellent blog by Mariza Gottdank, at: http://vencendoomedodefalaringles.blogspot.com. Other sources include the BBC website: (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/vocabulary/football.shtml).

Brazil Travel Tips 5 / Dicas do Brasil 5

5 - SEE THE MEETING OF THE WATERS

The Meeting of the Waters is one of the most impressive natural phenomena of the world, with the black waters of the Negro River and the muddy waters of the Solimões (the upper section of the Amazon) flow side by side without mixing for a total of 6 km. This phenomenon is due to differences in temperature, density and speed of the two rivers.

To visit the Meeting of the Waters, you need to take a flight to the Amazon city of Manaus. Manaus has an impressive array of historical buildings, which are a heritage of the Amazon rubber boom which made the city one of the richest in the world, like an El Dorado where gold flowed through the streets, where the food was ordered from Europe and where people used money to light their cigars (For a detailed description of the rubber boom in Manaus, please check out www.gringoes.com/articles.asp?ID_Noticia=487), and which soon ended when some
seeds were smuggled out to Asia, where rubber could be produced more cheaply.

It is worth taking a look round the main buildings of Manaus to feel the sheer wealth of the golden age of rubber. One example is the Teatro Amazonas (Amazon Theatre), which was designed by a Portuguese architect, with iron from Glasgow, tiles from Alsace-Lorraine and crystal chandeliers from Italy, not to mention the cupola made of Italian marble and the interior of gold leaf and red velvet.

Other Europe-inspired buildings include the Customs House (built in 1906 using materials shipped in from England) and the Municipal Clock (imported from Switzerland and inaugurated in 1927). However, the city does have something for the more ecologically inclined, such as several parks, a Botanical Garden and Zoo, and Ponta Negra Beach which is one of the city’s main attractions.
After you have taken all this in, go to the Port (also built by the English) and take a short trip to the Meeting of the Waters. The boat I used was the Amazon Explorer, taking in a fish lunch and a visit to an igarapé, which is a narrow river
branch running through the forest. One word of warning, don’t try swimming there as there are deadly piranha fish with razor-sharp teeth.www.manausonline.com

Brazil Travel Tips 4 / Dicas do Brasil 4

4 - VISIT THE PANTANAL

If you are into wildlife and nature, and also enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, then you must not miss the Pantanal, which covers a significant part of the Brazilian States of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is about 10 times the size of the Everglades and is the largest freshwater wetland in the world. The Pantanal, which occupies some 2300 square kilometres, is thriving with wildlife, more than a thousand different species to be precise. There is also evidence of different types of vegetation, including Amazonian and cerrado.

One piece of advice, explore the southern part near Campo Grande rather then entering through Poconé. I don’t know if I was unusually unlucky, but when I went there with a group of students we went to the northern part and there were only flamingoes and alligators. In the South, so I’ve been told, the Pantanal is much better. Travel is much better in the dry season - another advantage is that the rivers are shallow and the fish can be observed. Fishing is allowed (subject to restrictions) but hunting is not.

There are very few major roads, and the one I experienced (the Transpantaneira) was - although this was 20 years ago - a dirt track with very precarious bridges and alligators waiting in the rivers with their mouths open. The best way of exploring the Pantanal was of course the Train of Death, but sadly this does no longer run. So the only option is to travel to Campo Grande and make your way from there, taking in the aptly named city of Bonito.

4 - VISITE O PANTANAL

Brazilian League / Campeonato Brasileiro

Last Saturday the Brazilian Football League kicked off, and once again all eyes are on Brazil to see where the next jewel may be unearthed, so that one of the big guns like Barcelona and Manchester United may snap them up to play on the big stage. The Brazilian League started back in 1971 and the first winners were Atlético Mineiro who, surprisingly, have never won the League since.

This year, the highlight is the “Santastic” star-studded Santos team with names like Neymar and Paulo Henrique “The Goose” (photo), and which is now the most prolific team in the whole world, with more than 3 goals a game. Despite Neymar and The Goose being the two best players in the Brazilian League, astonishingly Brazil coach Dunga did not put them in the team for the World Cup in South Africa next month.

Other main favourites include Flamengo, or the Empire of Love (because of the star players Adriano “The Emperor” and Vagner Love), Corinthians (with Ronaldo - who we call “The Mammoth” because of his weight - and the club’s incredible fans) and São Paulo FC (who always do well, without any real stars in the team). There are twenty teams in the top flight (Série A), and four are relegated to Série B, from where the top four are also promoted. There are also lower divisions, Série C (where my team, Marília AC, are playing) and Série D. The top five in Série A qualify for the Libertadores Cup, the South American equivalent of the Champions’ League.

VocabuLando / VocabuLando

“VocabuLando” is a book that should be on the shelf of anyone dealing with translation from or into Portuguese, as it is, in the words of David Coles who wrote the preface to the work, “a treasure trove for teachers, students and translators”. Written by Isa Mara Lando, one of the world’s most famous translators with over 80 translated books under her belt (written by authors ranging from Yukio Mushima to Edgar Allan Poe), this is a new type of dictionary with warnings about false cognates, words with several meanings (such as “deliver” which warrants a whole page - see pages 144 - 145) and other deceptive words. In all, this wonderful masterpiece has 2,000 words explained with 7,000 example sentences. The wealth of vocabulary is impressive: for the word “scold”, Ms Lando presents no less than 25 translations in Portuguese (Page 439). Usage notes abound, such as the fact that “dozens” (as in “dozens of volunteers”) translates in Portuguese not as the literal “dúzias” but as “dezenas” which literally means “tens” - Page 170)

Isa Mara Lando later brought out an abridged version, which in Isamaric jargon was the “son”, with the original being the “father”. My advice is to buy the full version only. There is also a workbook for additional practice. The book can be bought at Disal.
