Brazil Travel Tips 3 / Dicas do Brasil 3

3 - WATCH A FOOTBALL GAME AT THE MARACANÃ

Most people would agree that Brazil is one of the most important footballing nations, having produced such famous names as Garrincha, Vavá, the two Ronaldos, Jairzinho, Sócrates and many others - and of course the one who many people think is the best in the world, Pelé. People in Brazil have been mad about the game ever since Charles William Miller arrived in Brazil in 1894 with two footballs and a set of rules, which he had brought back from England where he studied.

Brazil has many important clubs, although many of the country’s best players move on to the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United to make more money. Even so, a football match in Brazil is an interesting experience, especially in the Brazilian League Série A, the equivalent of the Premier League.

The best place to watch a game is the Maracanã stadium (the name means “like a rattle” in Tupi, after the noise of the many birds that inhabit the area) in Rio de Janeiro, built in 1950 for the World Cup and still one of the great temples of football. Try to see a game between two of Rio’s big four, particularly Flamengo x Vasco or Flamengo x Fluminense, which usually pack 80 thousand or so into the great stadium.

The Big Four of Rio have their own characteristics, which are:

FLAMENGO (Red and Black): This is the team favoured by the common people, the poorer segments of the population. It is also one of the most popular teams in Brazil and the world, together with Corinthians of São Paulo, and is the only one to have had its team anthem sung in English (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOkCGNEft0M)
VASCO (Black and White): This team is more popular with people of Portuguese descent but is also popular overall. It is also the youngest of the four, having started footballing activities in 1923. They do not play much at the Maracanã as they have their own stadium.
FLUMINENSE (Green, Red and White): This is one of the oldest teams in the country, and is popular with the more affluent segments of the population, mainly because the team is based in the leafy neighbourhood of Laranjeiras, beneath the Statue of Christ for which Rio is famous.
BOTAFOGO (Black and White): This team’s supporters are the most difficult to define, although it is usually popular with older people.
Watching a game in Maracanã, especially a Fla-Flu, is an unforgettable experience. especially because there is much less crowd violence than in São Paulo, for example.
