Yes, it’s that time again - time for the Greatest Show in the Universe, which is Brazilian Carnival! Come over and shake your hips, get involved in the incredible Carnival atmosphere that grips the country at this time of year. Before you book your flight or cruise please remember that the Greatest Show in the Universe is in March this year, not in February.
Brazilian Carnival is something spectacular that gets better every year, and of course the best thing to do is actually participate in the parade to feel the spirit of the occasion. You can choose either the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, which is more luxurious, or the São Paulo Carnival, which is more authentic. Just choose one of the samba schools and learn their song, then get that flight and take to the Sambodrome. To choose a samba school, just telephone ++ 55 21 3213-5151 (for Rio) or ++ 55 11 2853-4555 (for São Paulo). If you are energetic, you can even do it all: two days samba’ing in São Paulo on Friday and Saturday, then whisk down to Rio for the parades on Sunday and Monday. The trip to Rio takes 6 hours by bus. If you go by car, you can stop for lunch halfway at Battagini, in Lorena (half-way to Rio), ++ 55 12 3152-7755.
In general, each samba school has 4,000 people and has its parade opened by an Opening Troupe (comissão de frente) and the Opening Float (abre-alas). Each school has a theme (enredo) which must be transmitted by the different sections (alas) of the school, the floats (carros alegóricos), costumes (fantasias) and other ornaments (alegorias e adereços); there is also the samba theme (samba-enredo) which is produced by the drummers (bateria) and sung by a lead singer (puxador). One highlight is the section of women in typical Bahian garb (Ala das Baianas), and then there is the Head Dancer and Standard Bearer (mestre-sala e porta-bandeira - see photo). Atop the floats are famous people (destaques), these usually being models, politicians, Globo soap opera actors and former participants of Big Brother Brazil (BBB). Strict rules govern timing, size of floats, constitution of the parade and the like.
Next week I shall focus on the dialect of carioquês (that’s /carry-ó-KAYSH/) which is essential if you are heading for Rio (at any time, not only during Carnival).

O Carnaval brasileiro é algo espetacular que fica melhor a cada ano, e é claro que a melhor coisa a fazer é participar do desfile para sentir o clima desta ocasião. Poderá escolher o Carnaval Carioca, que tem mais luxo, ou o Carnaval de São Paulo, bem mais autêntico com o legítimo samba no pé. Basta escolher uma das Escolas de Samba e aprender a música (samba-enredo), aí poderá pegar aquele avião rumo ao Sambódromo. Se tiver fôlego, pode até mesmo fazer dois dias de desfile em São Paulo na sexta e no sábado, depois viajar ao Rio a tempo de desfilar na Marquês de Sapucaí no domingo e na segunda-feira. A viagem ao Rio leva 6 horas de ônibus. Se viajar de carro, recomendo almoçar no Battagini, em Lorena, no meio do caminho: ++ 55 12 3152-7755.
Em geral, cada escola de samba tem uns 4,000 integrantes e começa com a Comissão de Frente e o Abre-Alas. Cada escola tem um tema (enredo) o qual deve ser apresentada pelas várias alas da escola, assim como pelos carros alegóricos, pelas fantasias e pelas alegorias e adereços. Há o tema musical, ou samba-enredo, o qual é acompanhado pela bateria e cantado pelo vocalista principal (puxador). Um ponto alto é a Ala das Baianas, um grupo de mulheres em roupas típicas das Bahia, e há ainda o par de honra, o mestre-sala e a porta-bandeira (ver foto). Em cima dos carros alegóricos há pessoas famosas (destaques), normalmente modelos, políticos, atores e atrizes de novelas da Globo e ex-participantes do Big Brother Brasil (BBB). Há regras rígidas sobre cronometragem, o tamanho dos carros alegóricos, a organização da escola e assim por diante.
Na próxima semana apresentarei o dialeto falado no Rio de Janeiro, ou carioquês (fala-se /cári-ó-QUÊICH/), algo essencial se pretende conhecer o Rio (mesmo fora da época do Carnaval).
