The end of this year shall be a new historic occasion in the history of Brazil, as a woman shall be going up the ramp of the Planalto Palace to don the Presidental Sash, for the very first time. The chosen woman is Dilma Rousseff from the centre-left Workers’ Party (PT), who defeated conservative candidate José Serra (PSDB) in a run-off ballot, none of the nine candidates having obtained an absolute majority of valid votes in the first round. This, despite the fact that Ms Rousseff was not well known before she was chosen as Lula’s official candidate. [1]
Dilma Vana Rousseff, of Bulgarian origin, was born in December 1947 to Bulgarian immigrant Pedro Rousseff, or Pétar Rusév (Петър Русев) and his Brazilian wife Dilma Jane Silva, in the coffee-growing state of Minas Gerais, also famous for its cheese production. In the 1960s she was radicalised by prominent anti-capitalist thinkers [2] and fought against the dictatorship during the Brazilian Years of Lead [3], although she never got to shoot anyone. She was tortured in prison [4] and then went on to University and became a civil servant.
She shot to fame as part of Lula’s Government. Indeed, Lula was a key element in her campaign as this great President and Statesman, who Barack Obama once called “the most popular politician on Earth” [5] was constitutionally barred from running for a third consecutive term. Expectations for the Dilma Administration are high, and she is “expected to outshine Angela Merkel and Hillary Clinton” [6].
Despite the economic euphoria, Ms Rousseff has some big problems to face, such as high interest rates (the highest in the world), taxation (also the highest in the world, with more than a hundred different taxes), stamping out corruption, the push for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, and tackling rampant crime and crack cocaine pushing as Brazil prepares for the World Cup in four years’ time.

A escolhida é Dilma Rousseff, do Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), de centro-esquerda, que derrotou o candidato conservador José Serra (PSDB) no segundo turno, já que nenhum dos nove candidatos obteve maioria absoluta no primeiro turno. Isso, apesar do fato de que a Dilma não era muito conhecida antes de ser escolhida como a candidata oficial do Presidente Lula [1].
Dilma Vana Rousseff, de origem búlgara, nasceu em dezembro de 1947, ao imigrante búlgaro Pedro Rousseff, or Pétar Rusév (Петър Русев) e sua esposa brasileira Dilma Jane Silva, no Estado de Minas Gerais, famoso pela sua produção de café e de queijo. Nos anos 1960 ela se radicalizou sob a influência de pensadores anti-capitalistas [2] e lutou contra a ditadura nos Anos de Chumbo [3], mas nunca chegou a dar um tiro. Foi torturada na prisão [4] e depois foi à Faculdade e tornou-se funcionária pública.
Ela ficou famosa como parte no governo lulista. De fato, Lula foi uma peça importante na sua campanha, já que este grande Presidente e Estadista de fama mundial, a quem Barack Obama chamou de “o político mais popular da Terra” [5] foi constitucionalmente proibido de buscar um terceiro mandato. As expectativas para o novo governo dilmista são altas, e espera-se que ela “brilhe mais que Angela Merkel ou Hillary Clinton” [6].
Apesar da euforia econômica, Dilma tem alguns grandes problemas a enfrentar, como as taxas de juros (as mais altas do mundo), a carga tributária (a mais alta do mundo, com mais de uma centena de impostos), a eliminação da corrupção, a busca de uma cadeira permanente no Conselho de Segurança da ONU, e o combate à criminalidade e ao tráfico de crack e outras drogas, enquanto o Brasil se prepara para a Copa do Mundo em 2014.
