Brazil Travel Tips 5 / Dicas do Brasil 5

5 - SEE THE MEETING OF THE WATERS

The Meeting of the Waters is one of the most impressive natural phenomena of the world, with the black waters of the Negro River and the muddy waters of the Solimões (the upper section of the Amazon) flow side by side without mixing for a total of 6 km. This phenomenon is due to differences in temperature, density and speed of the two rivers.

To visit the Meeting of the Waters, you need to take a flight to the Amazon city of Manaus. Manaus has an impressive array of historical buildings, which are a heritage of the Amazon rubber boom which made the city one of the richest in the world, like an El Dorado where gold flowed through the streets, where the food was ordered from Europe and where people used money to light their cigars (For a detailed description of the rubber boom in Manaus, please check out www.gringoes.com/articles.asp?ID_Noticia=487), and which soon ended when some
seeds were smuggled out to Asia, where rubber could be produced more cheaply.

It is worth taking a look round the main buildings of Manaus to feel the sheer wealth of the golden age of rubber. One example is the Teatro Amazonas (Amazon Theatre), which was designed by a Portuguese architect, with iron from Glasgow, tiles from Alsace-Lorraine and crystal chandeliers from Italy, not to mention the cupola made of Italian marble and the interior of gold leaf and red velvet.

Other Europe-inspired buildings include the Customs House (built in 1906 using materials shipped in from England) and the Municipal Clock (imported from Switzerland and inaugurated in 1927). However, the city does have something for the more ecologically inclined, such as several parks, a Botanical Garden and Zoo, and Ponta Negra Beach which is one of the city’s main attractions.
After you have taken all this in, go to the Port (also built by the English) and take a short trip to the Meeting of the Waters. The boat I used was the Amazon Explorer, taking in a fish lunch and a visit to an igarapé, which is a narrow river
branch running through the forest. One word of warning, don’t try swimming there as there are deadly piranha fish with razor-sharp teeth.www.manausonline.com
