Brazil Travel Tips 2 / Dicas do Brasil 2

2. TAKE THE TRAIN FROM CURITIBA TO PARANAGUÁ

Railway enthusiasts and ecotourists alike enjoy this trip, one of the great train journeys in the world. The breathtaking scenery along the 103 km of track, along a railway whose very construction was hailed as a major feat of engineering, is just wonderful. The train sets out from Curitiba, a pleasant Brazilian town well worth a visit, famous for its green parks and innovative transport system. As the train leaves Curitiba Station, a live commentary gets under way and a snack is served. After the first few relatively uninteresting miles through Greater Curitiba, the lush vegetation soon starts, with Araucaria pines in profusion. Then comes the highlight, the descent of the mountain range, through 14 tunnels and 30 bridges, including St John's Bridge, 55 metres high. Before you know it, you are at sea level, in Morretes where the journey ends (except on Sundays, when it goes on to Paranaguá). In Morretes you can relax beside the calm river that winds its way to the sea, and of course eat "barreado", a local dish made from meat, rice and manioc flour, of Azorian origin. After this delicious dish, then you can either take a van to the local beaches and then back to Curitiba, or take the bus back to the Smiling City (Curitiba), or just laze about waiting for the train to take you back.
