After a troubled vote counting process, with scuffles in the Sambodrome and floats set on fire, this year’s São Paulo Carnival was won by Mocidade Alegre from the North of the city. This was the 8^th time this school has won, the first since 2009. The winning school presented a theme based on the life of famous Bahian writer Jorge Amado, who was born 100 years ago this year, and depicted Afro-Brazilian culture in the state of Bahia and its capital Salvador, including the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, and this spectacular show was further enhanced with the dazzling performance of Aline Oliveira, the new Queen of the Drums.

One curiosity about this year’s Carnival was that for the first time three Samba Schools run by football supporters’ groups paraded: Gaviões da Fiel (Corinthians), Mancha Verde (Palmeiras) and Dragões da Real (São Paulo). One highlight was to be the presence of President Lula in the Gaviões parade (about his life) but he had to miss it on doctor’s orders. The themes were very varied – as well as Lula and Jorge Amado, other themes included the history of glasses (spectacles, not the drinking kind) and the coastal city of Itanhaém in São Paulo State.

In general, the Greatest Show of the Universe exceeded expectations with a breathtaking display of floats and dazzling costumes. The Sambodrome was also graced by the usual array of female beauty, including Cacau Colucci (Dragões da Real) and Mayra Cardo (X-9), both of Big Brother fame; former panicats Tânia Oliveira (Tom Maior) and Juliana Salimeni (Mancha Verde), the latter of whom really set the sambodrome on fire; actress Quitéria Chagas (Vila Maria) who overflowed with happiness; Kátia Salles (Pérola Negra) who wowed the crowd with her captivating smile; and also the winner of the Miss Bumbum, or Miss Backside, competition, Rosana Ferreira (X-9). 

Depois de uma apuração conturbada, com brigas no Sambódromo e carros alegóricos incendiados, o Carnaval de São Paulo este ano foi vencido pela Mocidade Alegre da Zona Norte. Esta foi a oitava vitória desta escola, a primeira desde 2009. A escola vencedora apresentou um enredo sobre o escritor baiano Jorge Amado, que nasceu 100 anos atrás, e apresentou ainda a cultura afro-brasileira na Bahia e na capital baiana Salvador, inclusive a religião afro-brasileira, o Candomblé, e este show espetacular se abrilhantou ainda mais com a ginga impressionante de Aline Oliveira, a nova Rainha da Bateria.

Uma curiosidade sobre o desfile deste ano é que pela primeira vez havia três escolas de samba mantidas por torcidas organizadas de times de futebol: Gaviões da Fiel (Corinthians), Mancha Verde (Palmeiras) e Dragões da Real (São Paulo). O destaque iria ser a participação de Lula no desfile da Gaviões (sobre a sua vida) mas não pôde participar por ordens médicas. Havia grande variedade de enredos – além de Lula e Jorge Amado, havia ainda a história dos óculos e a cidade litorânea de Itanhaém no Estado de São Paulo.

No geral, o Maior Show do Universo superou as expectativas com um desfile impressionante de carros alegóricos imponentes e fantasias cintilantes. Como de praxe, o Sambódromo foi embelezado pelo costumeiro desfile da beleza feminina, com a participação das ex-BBB Cacau Colucci (Dragões da Real) e Mayra Cardo (X-9); as ex-panicats Tânia Oliveira (Tom Maior) e Juliana Salimeni (Mancha Verde), sendo que esta realmente incendiou o Sambódromo; a atriz Quitéria Chagas (Vila Maria) que esbanjou felicidade; Kátia Salles (Pérola Negra) que conquistou o público com seu sorriso cativante;  e também a vencedora do concurso Miss Bumbum, Rosana Ferreira (X-9).
