6 - VISIT VILA MADALENA

If you ever have the chance to visit São Paulo, one of the biggest cities in the world with a population of 15 million, there is one neighbourhood with a charm of its own. I am talking, of course, about Vila Madalena, which is Brazil’s answer to Notting Hill in London.

Defined by Simon Tarmo (http://www.gringoes.com.br/articles.asp?ID_Noticia=1954) as “a small, gracious haven amongst numerous not-so-couth areas”, this is the area of the intellectual population of São Paulo, and is famous for its bars, restaurants and art galleries.

The first thing you notice when you get there is the unusual names of its streets, including Luminárias (Lampshades), Girassol (Sunflower), Aspicuelta (named after a 16th Century Spanish priest), Purpurina (Glitter) and others. Apparently these names were given by the students that inhabited the area in the 1960s.

This is the place where you see people from all walks of life, and where you are sure to find what you want, whether good shopping, restaurants of several kinds, or just a watering hole where you can chat the time away while appreciating an ice-cold draught beer (chopp).

I recommend the Feijoada da Lana, at Rua Aspicuelta 421. Although I have never eaten there myself, everyone says it is the best place to savour that great Brazilian dish, feijoada, and of course the wonderful home-made puddings. The most unusual thing is that the owner is not Brazilian - but Russian!

To get there, take the Tube to Vila Madalena Station on the Green Line, then bus 138 (Munhoz Júnior), ask to get off near Wizard or Aspicuelta streets.

6 - VISITE A VILA MADALENA

Se você tiver a oportunidade de visitar São Paulo, uma das maiores cidades do mundo com uma população de 15 milhões, há um bairro com charme próprio. Estou falando, é claro, da Vila Madalena, o Notting Hill tupiniquim.

Definida por Simon Tarmo (http://www.gringoes.com.br/articles.asp?ID_Noticia=1954) como uma “um paraíso pequeno e gracioso entre alguns bairros não tão refinados”, este é o reduto dos intelectuais de São Paulo, famoso pelos seus bares, restaurantes e galerias de arte.

Ao aportar por estas bandas, primeiro notará os nomes pouco comuns das suas ruas, como as ruas Luminárias, Girassol, Aspicuelta (o nome de um sacerdote espanhol do século 16), Purpurina e outros. Aparentemente estes nomes foram dados pelos estudantes que aqui residiram nos anos 60.

É aqui onde se podem ver pessoas de todos os tipos, e onde encontrará com certeza aquilo que procura, seja isso boas compras, restaurantes de diversos tipos, ou só um ponto de reabastecimento etílico aonde poderá saborear um chopp estupidamente gelado enquanto aprecia um bom papo.

A minha indicação é o restaurante Feijoada da Lana, na Rua Aspicuelta 421. Embora nunca tenha comido lá, todos dizem que é o melhor lugar para se deliciar com o prato-rei da cozinha brasileira, a suculenta feijoada, sem se esquecer de experimentar os deliciosos doces caseiros. Outra curiosidade é que a dona não é brasileira - mas russa!

Para chegar, pegue o Metrô até a Estação Vila Madalena na Linha Verde, depois o ônibus 138 (Munhoz Júnior), pedir para descer na rua Wizard ou Aspicuelta.
