World Cup Venues 3 - Cuiabá / Cidades da Copa 3 - Cuiabá

My tour of the World Cup host cities now moves on to Cuiabá, in the heart of the Mato Grosso region.  This remote region is one of the hottest parts of the country and is so far away that it is even in a different time zone (a distinction it shares with Manaus, considering World Cup venues in Brazil). Its main distinction is agricultural production; the state is also the birthplace of the current Miss Brazil [1]. Although the state has many tourist attractions, like the Araguaia River and part of Amazonia [2], it is the Pantanal that stands out. However, personally I’ve done the trip and found it disappointing, only flamingos and storks, and millions of alligators that wait with their mouths open while cars negotiate the precarious bridges of the Transpantanal Highway (this was many years ago, however, so things may have changed). I personally think the Pantanal is much better near Campo Grande, so I advise you get a bus from Cuiabá to Campo Grande (12 hours) and explore the Pantanal from there. I have written about the Pantanal in this blog [3].

The stadium in Cuiabá, the Arena Pantanal, is strongly tipped to be a white elephant after the World Cup, as football in Mato Grosso is almost non-existent. The state’s best team is not even in Cuiabá, but in the distant Lucas do Rio Verde, a city that has boomed with agribusiness.

Conference in Recife / Conferência no Recife

I have just returned from Recife where I had the opportunity to attend the V ProZ Brazilian Conference which, thanks to the excellent organisation by Jú Chaad, Nina Cavalcanti and the MilkTrados team, managed to surpass the standard of previous Conferences, with an interesting blend of international wisdom brought all the way from the United States by Barry Olsen and Judy Jenner and local knowledge by equally famous translators on the national scene. Everyone enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot, while also appreciating the beauty of the Boa Viagem Beach and the excellent Pernambucan delicacy found nowhere else, the exquisite taste of Bolo de Rolo, a kind of guava roll that can be bought at Recife airport. You can read about bolo de rolo (in Portuguese) [1] and find a recipe (in English) in [2]; if this has made your mouth water, you can order them through [3].
If you haven’t yet attended a ProZ Conference, either national or regional, don’t delay – sign up for a Conference today! There are plenty of opportunities for learning and networking, and excellent courses. I’m already eagerly awaiting next year’s Conference which, I believe, could be in Santos, the São Paulo coffee port once famous for its exports of coffee and more recently for the likes of Pelé, Robinho and now King Neymar [4].

Were there any negative points? Yes – the terrible service of Gol Airlines, that served no free food or drinks, except one half-glass of water, for a 3-hour flight.

World Cup Venues 2 - Brasília / Cidades da Copa 2 - Brasília

The next venue in my series of World Cup host cities is the city of Brasília, the national capital. Brasília became the national capital in 1960, replacing the Marvellous City of Rio de Janeiro. The controversial decision to move the capital inland was made by President Juscelino Kubitschek, amid great expense. (Apart from frittering away billions on building a new city in the middle of nowhere, Mr Kubitschek’s other contribution was that of wiping out Brazil’s passenger trains, giving priority to road transport). The construction of Brasília took five years; a video about the construction is shown at [1].
Brasília doesn’t have much to offer the tourist except for the magnificent architecture present in its buildings and in the city itself, originally laid out in the form of an aeroplane. This was largely the work of Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil’s most famous architect who died last year at the age of 104, and Lúcio Costa. In [2] you can get an idea of the structure of the city (in Portuguese), but bear in mind that this is an old video, the city has now turned into an urban sprawl with many of the problems of large cities in general. A more recent tourist video of Brasília is at [3].

The stadium in Brasília is the Mané Garrincha Stadium, named after a famous Brazilian player who fathered many children and who drank himself to death after a long career with Rio’s famous Botafogo club. (You can read about this great player at [4]).

World Cup Venues 1 - Belo Horizonte / Cidades da Copa 1 - Belo Horizonte

In the next twelve months, I shall present a series on the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, hoping that you will make that flight and come and see the best football in the world in fascinating Brazil where, in addition to football, you can see the natural wonders of Rio, the sun-soaked beaches of Fortaleza and the verdant city of Curitiba, among others – and even (if you’re lucky) see snow in São Joaquim, SC – after all, this time the World Cup will be in winter.
I start with Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. The city has a lot to offer the tourist even though there are no beaches. There is Pampulha Lagoon, a good place for a stroll and a rest [1, 2]. There is also a zoo and many parks. You must also try the typical Mineiro food, especially doce de leite and  arroz doce (rice pudding) – not to mention the cheese for which Minas Gerais is famous. Those who work as translators can see this city while participating in the ABRATES (Brazilian Translators' Association) conference at the end of May.
From Belo Horizonte you can easily reach the colonial towns such as Tiradentes [3] and also the tourist attraction of Inhotim [4].
One word of warning: be aware that Mineiros speak their very own dialect, which is difficult to understand. Words are often strung together, so that "litro de leite" (litre of milk) becomes "lidileite" [5]. An introduction to the Mineiro dialect is at [6].

Britain's Worst Day 50 years / O Pior Dia da Grã-Bretanha 50 anos

Fifty years ago today was the worst day in British history, as the most notorious British villain, evil axeman Dr Beeching, ripped the hearts out of thousands of British rural communities by publishing a report closing thousands of railway stations and miles of track. This evil and cruel man, thinking only about money, left millions of people without any transport as the replacement buses were soon removed (also – you’ve guessed it – to save money). I can’t imagine why on Earth he was made a Lord! The truth is that the cuts were senseless destruction.
The situation today makes Britain the laughing stock of Europe. Wide expanses of countryside without a single passenger train, including some areas of tourist interest (for example, no trains into the Cotswolds after Stratford-on-Avon); important lines with potential for commuter traffic without passenger services (the line from Kidsgrove through Hanley to Stoke-on-Trent is just one example); a main line with great potential for European connections razed to the ground [1] and important cities like Lutterworth and Daventry without trains or stations. The situation is terrible today, thanks to the savage work of the axeman, and in the meantime thousands of villages, like West Meon in Hampshire, in desperate need of stations and branch lines, are forgotten, as can be seen in [2]. The situation is bad in big cities too: as one comment puts it [3]: “I live alongside a disused railway line that now links three of the biggest dormitory communities that serve Newcastle upon Tyne. Every weekday several miles of queuing cars sit alongside the course of the railway. If the line were reopened tomorrow it would more than pay for itself as the thousands of stranded motorists opted for the train, to read the paper and save the outrageous parking charges in the city centre.” Alan from Bath says: “I live 12 miles out of Bristol and drive in every day. If the railway from Bristol to Midsomer Norton via Clutton still was still in place, I would happily leave the car at home. The local buses to Bristol are at the wrong times and drop off miles away from my work location. I would take my bike on the train and ride the last mile or two from the station” [4].
So, today, the most disgraceful event in English history, the Beeching Report, completes 50 years on. To see just how bad it is, the photo depicts what was once an important station on a key main line.

Mocidade Wins Again / Mocidade Vence Novamente

This year’s Carnival was won for the second time in succession by the Mocidade Alegre school, meaning that the school has nine victories to its credit, edging closer to the Carnival heavyweights Vai-Vai (14 titles) and Nenê da Vila Matilde (11 titles). The theme that Mocidade brought to the Sambodrome this time was that of seduction and temptation, which was showcased to billions of ecstatic spectators who packed the venue, which shook with emotion, or watched on television. In true Carnival tradition, exquisite floats and spectacular special effects wowed the crowds. Together with the floats and the general atmosphere of joy, model Lanna Moraes scintillated like a star in the São Paulo night, while Aline Oliveira kept the momentum as Queen of the Drums.
As always, the themes were very varied, ranging from the life of popular Brazilian comedian Mazzaroppi (Acadêmicos do Tucuruvi) to Brazilian wines (Vai-Vai) and Korean immigration (Unidos da Vila Maria). The female presence was also very significant as usual, with such famous names as Juliana Salimeni, a former panicat who once again paraded for the Mancha Verde, a samba school founded by Palmeiras supporters, showing her captivating smile and sylph-like body. As usual, the parade was brightened up by many beautiful female celebrities: apart from Lanna and Juliana, other famous names such as Cacau Colucci, a former participant in Big Brother Brazil (Dragões da Real),  Lorena Bueni (Nenê da Vila Matilde), Ana Paula Minerato (Gaviões da Fiel), model Caroline Bittencourt (Acadêmicos do Tucuruvi), model and singer Ellen Rocche (Rosas de Ouro).
A novelty this year was the absence of supporters’ groups when the results were informed. This was because of the incident last year in which some of the marks were torn.

Carnival 2013: The Show Begins / Carnaval 2013: O Show Começa

Yes, it’s that time of year again! It’s time to pack your bags and get that flight to Rio de Janeiro and enjoy the Greatest Show in the Universe, the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. Come and gaze in awe at the spectacular costumes and floats that parade along the purpose-built Sambadrome! Each samba group, known as a “school” [1], has between 3,000 and 5,000 revellers from all social strata, from poor slum dwellers to celebrities, these normally being Globo actors, panicats, football players or ex-participants of Big Brother Brazil (BBB). The people are divided into different “alas”, each representing a part of the overall theme: the “Ala das Baianas” which consists of (usually) chronologically advantaged Afro-Brazilian women in traditional Bahian garb, is particularly beautiful. Nearly all the main samba schools are from the financially disadvantaged North Zone of Rio de Janeiro or neighbouring towns (such as Nilópolis and São Gonçalo). Each school releases a new theme and song each year, and some songs become famous and are always sung at clubs, such as “Lendas do Abaeté” (Mangueira, 1973) [2] and “Bumbum Paticumbum Prugurundum” (Império Serrano, 1982) [3].
Clubs, by the way, are a good option if you want to try samba’ing but could not join a school for the parade. There are club parties for all segments of the public, from families to gays. Those seeking a quiet and family-oriented Carnival can go to Santa Maria Madalena [4, 5], a small country town some 200 km from Rio, near Búzios where Brigitte Bardot once lived and made the city famous [6].

Sim, aquela época do ano chegou!

London Tube - 150 Years / Metrô de Londres - 150 anos

Yesterday, 9 January, the best transport system in the world, the London Underground, commemorated 150 years of activity. The first line connected Paddington, Euston and other central stations. Operated by steam trains, this was a great success [1] and helped to solve London’s traffic problems. One hundred and fifty years later, the London Underground is the biggest system in the world and the lines snake around the great city, although sadly some stations and lines have been closed, leaving parts of the city without Underground transport, including Down Street, a central station which needs to be reopened [2], and the Ongar Branch whose closure ripped the heart out of the community, leaving many cities without Underground transport [3]. A map of the current Underground network can be found in any guide book or London Tourist Information Centre [4] or on the Internet [5].
For most Londoners, the Underground is affectionately known as the Tube, and it is a popular form of transport together with the double-decker bus. Millions of people now use the Tube every day, often with the aid of an Oyster card, which gives good discounts [6, 7]. There are also combined train/tube tickets so people from out of town can visit London for the day on an all-inclusive ticket. I did it from Coventry paying only £ 24 for return train travel (via Northampton) plus one day’s unlimited tube.
One contribution that the Tube has made to the world is the expression “Mind the gap”, which has become world-famous together with “Stand clear of the doors”. For more curiosities about the Tube, see [8, 9]

New Year's Eve with a Difference / Uma Virada de Ano Diferente

This year, for the first time, it is possible to enjoy the two most interesting things about New Year’s Eve in Brazil: the São Silvestre Race in São Paulo (now held in the morning and not in the afternoon as before) and the firework display on Copacabana Beach in the Marvellous City, Rio de Janeiro. So if you're in Europe there’s still time to book that flight leaving tomorrow  evening, you’ll be in Brazil the day before.
In the morning, you will be able to run the famous São Silvestre Race which follows a route snaking around the city of São Paulo, over a distance of 15 km, following in the footsteps of famous runners such as Paul Tergat from Kenya and Rosa Mota from Portugal,  both multiple winners here. You need  an official number and badge to take part. If you haven’t been successful in getting a place, there’s always next year. An added attraction is the ordinary people (photo) who often don unusual costumes to run, like a waiter who always runs in uniform, complete with tray.
Once the race is over, which is 1 pm if you run at a normal pace, get the Underground to the bus station (Rodoviária Tietê) and take the next Itapemirim bus to Rio, a 6-hour trip which is enough to get your energy back. Then head to Copacabana, the Princess of the Sea, you’ll be there in time to see the new year in and the spectacular firework display, 24 tonnes of fireworks. Over three million people line the most famous beach in the world, all wearing white. There will be several singers at the party, including famous Bahian singer Cláudia Leitte and Ellen Oléria who won The Voice, a talent show aired by Globo.  If you are interested, see [1].

Proclamation of the Republic / Proclamação da República

Today Brazil commemorates the anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic, with the end of the reign of Emperor Pedro II. Since 1889 Brazil has been a republic and even with a referendum held when the possibility of restoration of the monarchy was put to the vote, the republican system has had most support.
After independence in 1822, Brazil became an Independent Empire under two Emperors, Pedro I who made the immortal cry “Independence of Death” alongside the placid banks of the Ipiranga Stream [1], and then his son Pedro II. The Brazilian Empire was a troubled period in the country’s history [2], but the Republic was largely a result of the social changes that were sweeping the world at the time, such as the abolition of slavery by Princess Isabel [3] and the debt caused by the Paraguay War [2], as well as the rise of the middle class. Indeed, the Emperor and his Government were weakened by lack of support [4] and this paved the way for Marshal Deodoro to declare Brazil a Republic. As a result, Emperor Pedro II fled to Europe, an account of which is presented in [5], dying in Paris two years later.
The Monarchist movement still exists in Brazil, but is very weak. In 1993, there was a referendum to decide whether the Monarchy should be restored in Brazil, and the vast majority of the people rejected it, quite understandable in the country with the biggest social gap in the world between the haves and the have-nots, in a country that has been called Belindia, a mix of the richness of Belgium and the poverty of India.

Brazilian Independence Day / Dia da Independência do Brasil

Today is Brazil’s Independence Day. As usual, in different parts of the country the date was commemorated with military parades, complete with the rendition of famous patriotic anthems: as well as the National Anthem, there were the Independence Anthem [1] and the Expeditionary Soldier’s Anthem [2], the latter being the anthem of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force which played an important part in the Italian Campaign of the Second World War. In Porto Velho, however, the parade was very different, with the participation of deaf people for the first time. In the words of Dulcilene "Lene" Saraiva Reis, the intention is to showcase the projects that have been carried out with the hard of hearing in the State of Rondônia [3].
One can say that the Independence movement in Brazil started with the Inconfidência Mineira, a group of Minas Gerais aristocrats seeking the Independence of Brazil as a Republic, led by national hero Tiradentes. In 1789 the group was discovered; some influential people were whipped or exiled but Tiradentes, having no political influence, was hung, drawn and quartered [4]. The Independence movement gained momentum in 1808 when the Portuguese Royal Family was transferred to Brazil. In 1822, the Prince Regent Pedro was summoned back to Portugal but he refused, in what has been called the Dia do Fico or “I Stay Day”. Late he received a letter calling him back to Portugal once again. This was when, by the placid banks of the Ipiranga stream, he said those famous words “Independence or Death” (photo). He was crowned Emperor of Brazil in December that same year [5]. A short war was to ensue but soon Brazil guaranteed its status as an independent country.

Imported Words, Strange Meanings / Palavras Importadas, Sentidos Estranhos

Today I shall be looking at some English-sounding words which have entered the Portuguese language with strange meanings compared to what is expected. After all, as the Denorex advert said, things are not always what they seem.

I shall look at three words in common use:
OUTDOOR – In Portuguese, this is a noun and refers to the pretty hoardings that colour the city and advertise things – but unfortunately not in São Paulo after Gilberto Kassab, the worst mayor in the world, declared them illegal with the loss of 2 million jobs. (The city is now so dull that it would be an appropriate setting for “Fifty Tones of Grey”).
NO-BREAK (photo): This is an invented word in Portuguese and refers to a device to regulate voltage, thus avoiding power surges. In English they go by the name of UPSs, so asking for a no-break at Dixons shall have no effect at all – except that you may get some unbreakable tableware or something.
SMOKING – In Portuguese, this is common attire at weddings and other formal events. However, “To rent a smoking” means nothing in English – the correct word is tuxedo.
Do you know any more words like this? If so, please share them here.

When most people think of the translation industry, the first thing that comes to mind is the translation or interpretation of verbal language. However, there is another area, often overlooked, which is sign interpretation, by which spoken words are converted into gestures that can be understood by the hearing-impaired. This is a great help, for example, when parents have to communicate with their hearing-impaired child [1]. The relevance of sign language can be seen in the fact that Brazil has 5.7 million people with some kind of hearing impairment [2].
Even though sign language seems to have been used for a very long time, since the 2nd Century of the Common Era (CE), it was only recently that it became accepted. [3]
Each country has its own sign language system: in the United Kingdom there is British Sign Language (BSL) and Brazil has its own system which is called LIBRAS (photo). This fact opens up the possibility of translating one sign language into another, which could be useful if the speaker is not the same nationality as the audience. However, whether this would be feasible remains to be seen.
In Brazil, the market has a lot of opportunities, especially away from the big cities. For example, Reis [4] states that in the state of Rondônia the local Government had to hire LIBRAS interpreters on an emergency basis. The same situation is reported for the North of Paraná State [5]. However, to pursue this type of interpretation special training is required [6].

A State Holiday / Um Feriado Estadual

Today is a holiday in the State of São Paulo, in memory of the soldiers who gave their lives for democracy in the 1932 Constitutionalist Revolution. This uprising was organised by wealthy São Paulo residents in an attempt to oust President Getúlio Vargas who had taken power in a coup in 1930. Vargas’ coup dealt a blow to the domination of São Paulo and Minas Gerais in Brazilian politics [1].
The uprising started on 9 July 1932, after four students were killed by Government forces. The movement became known as MMDC, after the initials of the four students. The fighting was concentrated in several border areas especially the Paraíba Valley near the border with the State of Rio de Janeiro. Two towns, Lorena and Cruzeiro, stood out for their importance in the battles: the former due to the proximity of the trenches at Engenheiro Neiva and the explosives factory at Piquete [2]; the latter due to its closeness to the border and the strategic position of the tunnel between São Paulo and Minas Gerais states, being considered the City of the 1932 Revolution [3, 4]. In the end the Paulistas lost, as they had no support from other states, but this led to the enactment of a new Constitution in 1934 – only for Vargas to establish a dictatorship only three years later.
The memory of the Revolution lives on in street names throughout the State and also at the Obelisk in Honour of the Constitutionalist Soldier at the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo [5 and photo] where the bodies of the four students that sparked the revolution are buried, and which bears the words “They lived only a little to die well, they died young to live forever”.
