World Cup Venues 1 - Belo Horizonte / Cidades da Copa 1 - Belo Horizonte

In the next twelve months, I shall present a series on the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, hoping that you will make that flight and come and see the best football in the world in fascinating Brazil where, in addition to football, you can see the natural wonders of Rio, the sun-soaked beaches of Fortaleza and the verdant city of Curitiba, among others – and even (if you’re lucky) see snow in São Joaquim, SC – after all, this time the World Cup will be in winter.

I start with Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. The city has a lot to offer the tourist even though there are no beaches. There is Pampulha Lagoon, a good place for a stroll and a rest [1, 2]. There is also a zoo and many parks. You must also try the typical Mineiro food, especially doce de leite and  arroz doce (rice pudding) – not to mention the cheese for which Minas Gerais is famous. Those who work as translators can see this city while participating in the ABRATES (Brazilian Translators' Association) conference at the end of May.

From Belo Horizonte you can easily reach the colonial towns such as Tiradentes [3] and also the tourist attraction of Inhotim [4].
One word of warning: be aware that Mineiros speak their very own dialect, which is difficult to understand. Words are often strung together, so that "litro de leite" (litre of milk) becomes "lidileite" [5]. An introduction to the Mineiro dialect is at [6].

Começo com Belo Horizonte, a capital de Minas Gerais. A cidade tem muito a oferecer ao turista, mesmo sem ter praias. Há a Lagoa da Pampulha, onde poderás andar e também descansar [1, 2]. Há ainda um zoológico e muitos parques. Você precisará experimentar a deliciosa comida mineira, especialmente doce de leite e arroz doce – sem falar no queijo que fez de Minas Gerais um local famoso. Quem for da área de tradução poderá visitar esta cidade para a conferência do ABRATES no final de maio.

De “Belzonte” se pode facilmente visitar as cidades coloniais mineiras como Tiradentes [3] e também a atração turística de Inhotim [4].

Fica o alerta: esteja ciente de que os mineiros têm seu próprio dialeto, difícil de entender. Muitas vezes as palavras se juntam, assim “litro de leite” se torna “lidileite” [5]. Uma introdução ao dialeto mineiro está em [6].
