The Old Cradle of Earls and Barons / O Velho Berço de Condes e Barões

The city of Lorena, which I have just visited, is often known as the Old Cradle of Earls and Barons. This is because, in the golden age of coffee, there were many earls and barons in the town, in those days when “slaves tilled the land, where red-green coffee plantations sprouted” [1]. The most famous of these was of course the Earl of Moreira Lima who, through his generosity, helped many institutions in the town, including the Santa Casa hospital [2]. Indeed, in his song “Gama Rodrigues”, Davi Coura Borges says: “In 1912 the Earl asked to get equipment from Europe” [3].

As mentioned, the greatest period of the city was in the coffee boom, when many buildings were built with imported materials, such as St Benedict’s Church: “The altar came from Italy, and the images from Europe” [4]. There were also important sugar cane plantations, remembered today in the name of the adjacent city of Canas [5]. Fortunately the Dutra Motorway serves the town, sparing the town of Lorena the same fate of other hitherto opulent cities, such as Bananal, that declined into near oblivion.

Tourism in Lorena revolves mainly around historic buildings, but the view of the Mantiqueira Hills is breathtaking, especially at sunset. There is also a strong cultural and literary tradition in the city, and the Imperial Palms which make the city famous. Don’t forget to stuff yourself with pasta and wash it down with profiteroles at Battagini Restaurant (not exclusively Italian, despite the name) and fit in a delicious premium coffee at Café Malerba [6].

The Royal Wedding / O Casamento Real

Today was a very important day for the United Kingdom as Prince William finally went up the aisle to wed his betrothed, Miss Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, better known as Kate. This was the first time that a Prince of Wales has tied the knot since 1981 when Prince Charles wed Lady Diana Spencer. As today was declared a holiday in the United Kingdom, over one million people flocked to the heart of London to see the newlyweds.

Kate and William first met at University in Scotland. They eloped for some time until the engagement was announced in November last year. Kate Middleton is the 15th cousin of Prince William and a distant cousin of filmmaker Guy Ritchie, actress Helena Bonham Carter and the Aga Khan, whose father was once married to Rita Hayworth. [1]

William is second in succession to the throne after his father Prince Charles (to see the whole succession list, see [2]). However, many people think that William would be a better King than Charles, while others (like myself) would like to see a Republic in England. I feel a Republic would mean that the money currently spent on the Monarchy could be put to better use, like creating jobs and reopening branch railway lines that were closed in the 1960s. However, whatever your views on the Monarchy may be, you must agree that the Royal Family brings in droves of tourists who want to see Buckingham Palace, for example.

The Aviation Alphabet / O Alfabeto da Aviação

It is well-known that language issues have been a major cause of air crashes over the years. For this reason, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has introduced some regulations to improve safety in the skies over the years, and one of these was the decision to make English the international language of aviation, a move criticized by Jones [1], for whom Esperanto would be a better choice.

However, one problem that remains with the English alphabet is that many letters sound the same or almost the same. This can be an important issue in many situations, from control tower instructions to identification of airports. Consider, for example, the similarity of BHX (Birmingham, UK) and PHX (Phoenix, Arizona, United States) – this could make luggage go astray, for example. For this reason, a decision was made to introduce an international alphabet for aviation staff, also used by ground staff and travel agents when quoting ticket numbers, and any other situations requiring understanding. This alphabet was originally devised in the middle of the last century so soldiers could communicate in battle. [2]

The alphabet as presented here [3] is universal and all words are pronounced as in English with the exception of Quebec which is /KE-bec/ and not the British /kwe-BEK/. There are also some adaptations for cultural reasons [4]: for example in Malaysia and Indonesia “London” is used for the letter “L” instead of the usual Lima, because “Lima” is the number 5 in Malay, which could cause confusion. Similarly, in Saudi Arabia, where alcohol is banned, the letter W is “Washington” rather than “Whisk(e)y”. Finally, in major Delta Airlines hubs the letter D is not “Delta” but “David”, to avoid confusion with the name of the airline.

The alphabet as used (except for the exceptions mentioned above) is shown below. If you want to have any word spelt using the ICAO alphabet, just access www.spelltool.com/en/index.php.

THE ICAO ALPHABET / O ALFABETO ICAO

A = Alpha, B = Bravo, C = Charlie, D = Delta, E = Echo, F = Foxtrot, G = Golf, H = Hotel, I = India, J = Juliett, K = Kilo, L = Lima, M = Mike, N = November, O = Oscar, P = Papa, Q = Quebec, R = Romeo, S = Sierra, T = Tango, U = Uniform, V = Victor, W = Whisk(e)y, X = X-Ray, Y = Yankee, Z = Zulu

Brazil Travel Tips 8 / Dicas do Brasil 8

VISIT THE SOUTH OF BRAZIL / VISITE O SUL DO BRASIL

My suggestion today is to visit the South of Brazil, which looks like another country, so strong is the European influence here. If you hail from Europe one advantage is the cooler weather and even snow – although why anyone from blizzard-swept England would take an 18-hour flight to see snow is beyond me.

A good place to start is Curitiba [1], with vast expanses of parks and green areas, with European influence seen in sights like the German Wood. There is an excellent tourist bus service [2] with double-deckers, open top in summer (which, different from London, is not just one Thursday afternoon). Stuff yourself with delicious pasta, all washed down with ice-cream and chocolate sauce, at Madalosso [3], where you can eat as much pasta as you wish for less than 10 quid.

Leaving Curitiba along the Road of Death or the BR-376 (safer now after duplication), you soon cross the border into Santa Catarina, considered Brazil’s most beautiful state [4]. The gateway to the state is Joinville with its strong German influence. From there, visit Blumenau and also Pomerode, the most German town in Brazil. The best time to go is of course October, when Blumenau has its very own Oktoberfest [5, 6]. Then on through Balneário Camboriú to Florianópolis, the Isle of Magic with its many beaches [7].

Moving on, another area of mixed foreign influence, including Treze Tílias, also known as Dreizehnlinden, in the Brazilian Tyrol (Austrian influence)[8]. To see snow, July is the best month, just head for Urubici [9] or São Joaquim. After Laguna, a city steeped in history, you enter Rio Grande do Sul with more beaches at Torres.

Visit the country’s main wine-producing area, and roll back the years by riding a steam train. Here wine is king, but soon you enter Gaúcho territory, where they drink Chimarrão, a very bitter infusion, drunk when the water is still boiling, and eat a good old Gaúcho barbecue, or churrasco, with plenty of meat full of nice tasty fat.

End the journey in Porto Alegre, on the Guaíba River, and wrap it up in style by eating more pasta, or fatty meat if you prefer.

The famous samba school Vai-Vai has won the São Paulo Carnival for a record 14th time since the school was first founded in 1930.

The black and white school from Bixiga (a neighbourhood of strong Italian influence) was the second last school to parade on the first night and honoured João Carlos Martins, a famous pianist who became a maestro after losing the movement of his hands. Mr Martins wept with emotion, and said that the excitement he felt was like that of a concert at the Carnegie Hall. Famous people who paraded with the school included Maria Rita, daughter of famous Brazilian diva Elis Regina (1945 – 1982), Cafu, who captained Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002, and Brazilian TV presenter Ana Hickmann.

The standard of the parade was very high and of course beautiful women of all shapes, colours and sizes added splendour to this magnificent festival. These included, to name but a few, panicat Juliana Salimeni (Mancha Verde), model Ellen Rocche (Rosas de Ouro), Dani Sperle of Caldeirão do Huck fame (X-9 Paulistana), former Big Brother Brazil participant and TV host Sabrina Sato (Gaviões da Fiel), dancer Lanna Moraes (Mocidade Alegre) and even the international attraction of World Cup fame, Paraguayan model Larissa Riquelme (Vila Maria).

The Rio Dialect / Carioquês

Due to its sheer territorial size, Brazil has a wide range of dialects in different parts of the country, from the Welsh-like singing accent of the South to the hardly intelligible speech of the caipiras (country bumpkins) from rural Minas Gerais.

As the World Cup and the Olympics fast approach, one dialect to know is Carioquês (pronounced /carry-oh-KAYSH/) which is the Rio de Janeiro dialect, taking its name from “carioca”, a word used for Rio residents and which in turn comes from the Tupi “kari’oca” which means “white house”.

In Carioquês, there are two main differences in pronunciation compared to the rest of the country: 1) an “S” is usually pronounced SH (except at the beginning of a word) so “escola” (school) is /ish-KO-lah/; 2) an “R” is usually pronounced as a guttural sound like the German CH in “iCH” [which I shall represent as HH in my phonetic representation] so “aeroporto” (airport) is /a-air-oo-poHH-too/.

One expression you must learn is “merr’mão” /meHH-mowng/ which is used like “buddy” or “dude” in the United States, or “mate” in England. There is an excellent book by Priscilla A. Goslin called “How to be a Carioca” which gives an interesting insight into Carioquês and Rio life in general. It can be bought through Amazon.

The Biggest Show of the Universe / O Maior Show do Universo

Yes, it’s that time again - time for the Greatest Show in the Universe, which is Brazilian Carnival! Come over and shake your hips, get involved in the incredible Carnival atmosphere that grips the country at this time of year. Before you book your flight or cruise please remember that the Greatest Show in the Universe is in March this year, not in February.

Brazilian Carnival is something spectacular that gets better every year, and of course the best thing to do is actually participate in the parade to feel the spirit of the occasion. You can choose either the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, which is more luxurious, or the São Paulo Carnival, which is more authentic. Just choose one of the samba schools and learn their song, then get that flight and take to the Sambodrome. To choose a samba school, just telephone ++ 55 21 3213-5151 (for Rio) or ++ 55 11 2853-4555 (for São Paulo). If you are energetic, you can even do it all: two days samba’ing in São Paulo on Friday and Saturday, then whisk down to Rio for the parades on Sunday and Monday. The trip to Rio takes 6 hours by bus. If you go by car, you can stop for lunch halfway at Battagini, in Lorena (half-way to Rio), ++ 55 12 3152-7755.

In general, each samba school has 4,000 people and has its parade opened by an Opening Troupe (comissão de frente) and the Opening Float (abre-alas). Each school has a theme (enredo) which must be transmitted by the different sections (alas) of the school, the floats (carros alegóricos), costumes (fantasias) and other ornaments (alegorias e adereços); there is also the samba theme (samba-enredo) which is produced by the drummers (bateria) and sung by a lead singer (puxador). One highlight is the section of women in typical Bahian garb (Ala das Baianas), and then there is the Head Dancer and Standard Bearer (mestre-sala e porta-bandeira - see photo). Atop the floats are famous people (destaques), these usually being models, politicians, Globo soap opera actors and former participants of Big Brother Brazil (BBB). Strict rules govern timing, size of floats, constitution of the parade and the like.

Next week I shall focus on the dialect of carioquês (that’s /carry-ó-KAYSH/) which is essential if you are heading for Rio (at any time, not only during Carnival).

Sim, chegou a hora - a hora do Maior Show do Universo, que é o Carnaval brasileiro!
