British Curiosities 1 / Curiosidades Britânicas 1

British Curiosities (1)

Opening this new series, I'll look at the small place boasting one of the longest place names in the world. If you think tongue-twisting Brazilian names of Tupi origin, like Itaquaquecetuba, are complicated enough, take a deep breath - this village goes by the name of LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOGERYCHWYRNDROBWLLLLANTYSILIOGOGOGOCH, which is a description of the location (in Welsh), translating into English as "St Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel trees, near the rapid whirlpool, by St Tysilio's church and near a red cave". (I am one of the few people outside Wales who can actually say it reasonably well, thanks to my Welsh mother). If you want to learn how to say it, there is a step-by-step tutorial at http://llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk/say.php). Ah, and to get there - it's the first station after Bangor on the North Wales line.

http://llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk/say.php).

The Greatest Show on Earth / O Maior Show da Terra

This month (14th to 16th) marks the greatest show on Earth - the Rio Carnival. So, if you are tired of snow and/or rain, there's still time to get that flight and jet out to the sun-kissed beaches of Rio de Janeiro and gaze in awe at the dazzling display of samba and luxurious costumes. Benvindos!

In the Rio Grupo Especial (a bit like the Premier League of Samba), there are several samba schools, each representing a neighbourhood in Rio or in its suburbs. Each Samba School has between 3 and 5 thousand people divided into sectors or "alas", and has 70 minutes to parade down the street and wow the judges. There are several rules governing the parade, and one says there must be an "ala das baianas", a group of older women in heavy scintillating costumes.

A typical parade starts with the "comissão de frente" and the "abre-alas" introducing the theme, normally some aspect of Brazilian culture or history. The theme song "samba-enredo" is sung all the time, to the beat of the "bateria" (drums). Also important are the "mestre-sala e porta-bandeira" who show off the Samba School's flag.

Apart from Rio, São Paulo has a Samba parade which is a bit less luxurious but for many is more authentic. In both cities, there are also lower divisions, and samba schools get promoted and relegated like in football.

On Ash Wednesday it's all over, then people go back home and start preparing for the following year.

Back from the Snow / De Volta da Neve

First of all I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year - a bit belated I must admit.

I have just got back from the snow, I have been on a quick trip to the snow-covered United Kingdom and options for e-mail were limited. Most days there was so much snow that I could not even get to the cybercafé, as buses were skidding and trains were cancelled. I did manage to get to London before the Big Freeze but otherwise mainly stayed in my birth town of Coventry.

So now I am back, to entertain and inform my fellow translators with the usual nuggets of wisdom and translation tips. Enjoy!

Aproveitem!

False Cognates / Falsos Cognatos

One of the main pitfalls that lies in wait for unwary translators is that of false cognates, words that are not what they seem. Indeed, there are some cases where real gaffes could be committed through unawareness of this fact, like the visitor to a Spanish-speaking country who saw a young girl blush and remarked "¿Usted es embarazada?", unaware that in Spanish "embarazada" means "pregnant" rather than "embarrassed".
When asked about false cognates in PT<>EN, most people think of the basic cases, such as "puxar" (pull, not push) and "pretender" (intend, not pretend). However, there are many more out there, and here I present a selection extracted from www.sk.com.br/sk-fals.html.

New Blog

Welcome to my new translation blog! It is my first venture into the blogosphere, so let's see how the cookie crumbles!

In this blog, I plan to present points about translation and also curiosities about my two countries: the UK, where I was born, and Brazil, where I now live. Occasionally, I shall add photo and travel tips and news. Whenever possible, posts shall be presented in English and Portuguese.

Benvindos a meu novo blogue!

WELCOME!
BEM VINDOS!
