A State Holiday / Um Feriado Estadual

Today is a holiday in the State of São Paulo, in memory of the soldiers who gave their lives for democracy in the 1932 Constitutionalist Revolution. This uprising was organised by wealthy São Paulo residents in an attempt to oust President Getúlio Vargas who had taken power in a coup in 1930. Vargas’ coup dealt a blow to the domination of São Paulo and Minas Gerais in Brazilian politics [1].
The uprising started on 9 July 1932, after four students were killed by Government forces. The movement became known as MMDC, after the initials of the four students. The fighting was concentrated in several border areas especially the Paraíba Valley near the border with the State of Rio de Janeiro. Two towns, Lorena and Cruzeiro, stood out for their importance in the battles: the former due to the proximity of the trenches at Engenheiro Neiva and the explosives factory at Piquete [2]; the latter due to its closeness to the border and the strategic position of the tunnel between São Paulo and Minas Gerais states, being considered the City of the 1932 Revolution [3, 4]. In the end the Paulistas lost, as they had no support from other states, but this led to the enactment of a new Constitution in 1934 – only for Vargas to establish a dictatorship only three years later.
The memory of the Revolution lives on in street names throughout the State and also at the Obelisk in Honour of the Constitutionalist Soldier at the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo [5 and photo] where the bodies of the four students that sparked the revolution are buried, and which bears the words “They lived only a little to die well, they died young to live forever”.

Brazilian League 2012 / Campeonato Brasileiro 2012

Tomorrow the Brazilian Football League kicks off once again, promising to be one of the best and most competitive leagues in the world. Different from the Spanish league, for example, where only two teams have dominated the scene, in Brazil at least twelve teams are championship material, at least on paper. The main attraction of course is Neymar, tipped to be the best player of the world of all times, outshining the likes of Pelé, Maradona and Stanley Matthews [1]. Because of this, the Santastic team, an orchestra of football wizardry led by conductor Muricy Ramalho together with King Neymar and his Prince, the Goose (photo, Neymar is the shorter of the two), is the team to watch once again. Neymar shocked the world by refusing a move to Chelsea, but is strongly tipped to move to Barcelona or another big club in the European summer.
The league shall follow its usual format of four divisions, A to D, and Séries A, B and C have 20 clubs each. The city of Campinas is represented by Ponte Preta, and the football-mad state of Pernambuco is represented by Sport Recife and Náutico.
One trend that shall be maintained this year is the high number of foreigners playing in Brazil, some being famous names such as “El Mago” Valdivia (Palmeiras), Montillo (Cruzeiro) and “El Loco” Abreu (Botafogo), not to mention Chen Zhizhao, the first Chinese player to play in Brazil, who shall play for Corinthians [2]. Together with the locals, also including such names as Vagner Love and Ronaldinho Gaúcho, they shall provide an entertaining championship until the champion is crowned in December.

The Centenary of Santos FC / O Centenário do Peixe

Today Santos FC, which shot to fame with King Pelé who graced the black and white shirt for over 20 years and now reaches new heights with King Neymar and The Goose, commemorates 100 years of existence. It is the second oldest of São Paulo’s big clubs, after Corinthians (1910) and older than Palestra Itália, now Palmeiras (1914) and São Paulo (1935). The foundation of Santos FC was largely a result of discontent by the sports community in the city with the closure of CA Internacional in 1910 and the relocation of Americano to São Paulo, leaving the city without a football club. Interestingly, the club was founded only a few hours before the Titanic tragedy.
Santos FC was founded at a meeting at the Concórdia Club in Santos, on what is now João Pessoa Avenue. In the beginning the club was not successful, having won only two Paulista Championships in 1935 and 1955 [1]. However, the next year was the year when the youngster Pelé came to the club and changed its fortunes. Between 1961 and 1963, the club won nine competitions in a row, and The Fish clinched two consecutive World Club Championship crowns in 1962 and 1963 [2]. Then, with Pelé’s transfer to the United States in 1977, the club saw mixed fortunes until King Neymar came on the scene with his prince, Paulo Henrique “The Goose”. Last week Neymar and company shone in the Libertadores Cup but fell to Messi’s Barcelona in the World Club Cup Championship in Japan.
Today, Santos FC is one of three clubs active in the city of Santos and, Santos being a seaside town, has the nickname of The Fish, or sometimes The Whale. The Beach Derby against Portuguesa Santista brings the city to a standstill, and then there is Jabaquara, another ripe old team from the start of football in Brazil. Santos play their home matches at Vila Belmiro, close to which is the Santos Museum, with football memorabilia.

No entanto, no ano seguinte o jovem Pelé chegou e mudou a sorte do time.

The ProZ Website / O Site do ProZ

Today I shall look at my favourite translation website which is ProZ. This is the largest translation portal in the world, and has been a successful attempt to create one single site for translators throughout the world. Those translators who do not yet have a ProZ profile are strongly advised to get one: if you wish to use my profile as a reference it is visible at [1].
Amid the plethora of features offered by ProZ (some only for paying members), there are three I particularly like. First is the KudoZ system where fellow translators help each out with difficult terms and gain points which can be used to gain better positions in the lists of translators for each language pair. I regularly answer and occasionally ask questions. This (together with the excellent discussion forums) is also an excellent way to contact colleagues from throughout the world, from Lima to Ljubljana, from Bariloche to Beijing.
The second feature I like is the Blue Board, through which we can identify companies and outsourcers with a poor payment reputation. A points system is used, on a scale from 1 to 5, and any company with a rating of 5 should be OK, and anything below 4 is a cause for concern.
What I really like is the networking opportunities, namely PowWows and conferences. PowWows are informal gatherings (see [2] for one that I organised) while conferences are larger affairs lasting two or three days, with international guest speakers. This year’s Conference is already pencilled in for 21 to 23 September 2012, once again in the Marvellous City of Rio de Janeiro. The theme of this year’s Conference is “Translation: Professionalisation and Market”; further information at [3]. I have only been to one conference, the very first one in São Paulo [4], and can assure you it’s worthwhile! These conferences have had the participation of leading Brazilian translators such as Ana Júlia Perrotti-Garcia, Rosana Malerba and José Henrique Lamensdorf to name but a few, and sometimes international speakers to add further sparkle to the event.

After a troubled vote counting process, with scuffles in the Sambodrome and floats set on fire, this year’s São Paulo Carnival was won by Mocidade Alegre from the North of the city. This was the 8th time this school has won, the first since 2009. The winning school presented a theme based on the life of famous Bahian writer Jorge Amado, who was born 100 years ago this year, and depicted Afro-Brazilian culture in the state of Bahia and its capital Salvador, including the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, and this spectacular show was further enhanced with the dazzling performance of Aline Oliveira, the new Queen of the Drums.
One curiosity about this year’s Carnival was that for the first time three Samba Schools run by football supporters’ groups paraded: Gaviões da Fiel (Corinthians), Mancha Verde (Palmeiras) and Dragões da Real (São Paulo). One highlight was to be the presence of President Lula in the Gaviões parade (about his life) but he had to miss it on doctor’s orders. The themes were very varied – as well as Lula and Jorge Amado, other themes included the history of glasses (spectacles, not the drinking kind) and the coastal city of Itanhaém in São Paulo State.
In general, the Greatest Show of the Universe exceeded expectations with a breathtaking display of floats and dazzling costumes. The Sambodrome was also graced by the usual array of female beauty, including Cacau Colucci (Dragões da Real) and Mayra Cardo (X-9), both of Big Brother fame; former panicats Tânia Oliveira (Tom Maior) and Juliana Salimeni (Mancha Verde), the latter of whom really set the sambodrome on fire; actress Quitéria Chagas (Vila Maria) who overflowed with happiness; Kátia Salles (Pérola Negra) who wowed the crowd with her captivating smile; and also the winner of the Miss Bumbum, or Miss Backside, competition, Rosana Ferreira (X-9).

Carnival 2012: Show Time / Carnaval 2012: É Hora do Show

Are you depressed with the Euro crisis? Worried about unemployment in the UK and in the US? Fed up with subzero temperatures? Well, there’s an easy solution – get that flight and enjoy the Greatest Show in the Universe, which is the Brazilian Carnival! Shake your hips to the samba beat while having a whale of a time!
There are famous samba parades in specially dedicated Sambodromes in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Each parade is spread out over two days, in several divisions, with promotion and relegation like football leagues. A good plan is to have two days samba’ing in São Paulo, then two more days in Rio and wrap it up in style in Salvador with the Meeting of the Trios Elétricos in Castro Alves Square – although the Bahian carnival, at the time of writing, may not go ahead due to a police strike [1]. If you only have time (or energy) for one of these, remember the regional differences: São Paulo has the more authentic samba, while Rio prides itself on luxury. In the Northeast Carnival is completely different, millions of people dancing behind giant dolls (Recife/Olinda) [2] or Trios Elétricos (Salvador) [3].
If you are one of the very few people who do not like Carnival parades, head for the countryside, where Carnival is a lot quieter. I would recommend São Luiz de Paraitinga (SP) with its “carnaval das marchinhas” remembering classic sambas [4], and Santa Maria Madalena (RJ), a countryside town 200km from Rio which (together with the Lake District of Rio) is a point of escape for cariocas wishing to get away from the millions of people who come to Rio for Carnival [5]. Another option is Guaratinguetá, where one school shall honour Maria Verônica, a woman who pretended to be pregnant with quadruplets; the song can be heard at [6].

The Most Difficult Translation / A Tradução Mais Difícil

When you think of the most difficult areas of translation, most people think of high-responsibility areas like medical, or possibly literary with its plethora of cultural considerations. However, my view is that the most difficult area is legal translation.
There are many reasons that back up this view. Firstly, legal systems vary between countries, and some key terms also vary. In the translation of contracts, as Mochny [1] points out, “it is crucial that the translator be acquainted with the local culture and have knowledge of the legal texts of the countries involved, to grasp the meaning of certain clauses”. This view is shared by Victorino [2:8] who says “it is not always possible to translate the source term for an equivalent target term as the legal systems are different”.
There are, as mentioned, important differences in certain terms. In her excellent article [3], Luciana Corrêa Pinto ponders over the concept of homicide in Brazil and the United Kingdom; she adds that, with such variations in vocabulary, “a legal background contributes significantly to the translator’s professional success”. This involves even basic terms like “lei” (which can be law, act or statute) and “common law” which has nine translations according to Mello [4:594-595]. Even the basic word “contract” causes a problem: Fiorito [5] says “not all contracts in the French or Italian legal system can be translated as ‘contract’ in English”. Similarly De Leo [6] observes a difference between the use of réclusion  in France and Belgium, even though the language is the same.
Add to this the problem of the formality of legal texts, and you can see why legal translation is so tricky. Ideally, even if the translator is not a lawyer, someone from the legal profession should look it over.
