The Hyperamericanisation of Brazil / A Hiperamericanização do Brasil

A few weeks ago was Guy Fawkes’ Night, but the event was hardly publicised in Brazil. In contrast, only a few days earlier we had Hallowe’en which was much more popular, with black cats and jack o’lanterns bedecking English schools here. But what is the real reason behind this difference in popularity?

The real cause is the hyperamericanisation of Brazil, which is clearly shown in many ways. The fact is that Brazil loves all things American. For example, leading sports daily “Lance” has pages about the NBA and baseball results, but not a word about cricket or Rugby League. On a similar note, Brazil has copied the United States in adopting a 25/100 coin rather than the 20 that most of the world uses. In the exchange market, dollars are easy to find, pounds not so. Finally, on TV we have American sitcoms galore but no “Coronation Street”.

This has a bearing on the translation business here, as UK English is often not valued as it should be, American English being strongly preferred, even though the English word is often simpler, as “dummy” instead of “pacifier”.

Why has this happened? I feel good marketing and also the traditional leadership enjoyed by the United States have played a part, but another cause is the relative isolation of the United Kingdom, especially before the European Union was set up . Our role is now to show Brazilians that UK English is not wrong, but just another variant which is perfectly acceptable. This is now our task, and “yes, we can!”

Today is Guy Fawkes’ Night, an important day in British culture, on which bonfires are laid and fireworks are set off. Although the tradition exists throughout the country, the city of Lewes in Southwest England is famous for its festival, attracting throngs of tourists. The event commemorates the failed attempt to blow up the King (or, depending on your political views, the fact that this was tried), back in 1605.

It all started in 1603 when Queen Elizabeth I died. English Catholics, who had been persecuted, hoped that the new monarch, James I, would be more tolerant towards their religion, and that in the end England would return to the Catholic faith. When this did not materialise, an extremist group was formed, trying to kill the King and other people in Government. However, one of the conspirators let the cat out of the bag, and in the end the King found out about the plot. Just as Guy Fawkes and his group waited with barrels of gunpowder for the King to arrive, the guards pounced, arresting the group, all being later executed.
Nowadays, children put an effigy of Guy Fawkes (or of a politician) on the bonfire as it burns but, due to the religious grounds behind the event, in the beginning effigies of the Pope were burnt!
An interesting tradition that arose from this episode is that even today the monarch only enters Parliament once a year, and the cellar is still searched beforehand.

Within the space of 10 days Brazil will have a new President. The current President, Lula, has become one of the greatest statesmen of all time in the world and by far Brazil’s most popular President. Indeed, never before in the history of thic country has Brazil been so prosperous. However, Constitutional rules bar him from serving a third consecutive term.

The first round of the Presidential elections was held on 3 October, together with elections for Congress and other positions. There was no clear-cut victor with an absolute majority of valid votes, and this means that a second round is scheduled for Hallowe'en, between the two top contenders, Dilma Rousseff from Lula's Workers' Party (PT) and opposition candidate José Serra from the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB). In the first round Ms Rousseff (left in the picture) received 46% of the valid vote, compared with 30% for Mr Serra (right in photo) and 20% for the Green Party's candidate Marina Silva (centre in photograph).

Dilma Vana Rousseff was born in 1947 in the countryside town of Belo Horizonte, to a Bulgarian father and Brazilian mother. She studied economics and then played a part in opposing the notorious military dictatorship, having been tortured and put in prison. Later, she shot to fame, first as a Government official in Rio Grande do Sul and then as the Chief of Staff of the Lula Administration. Ms Rousseff has been married twice and has one daughter.

José Serra was born in São Paulo in 1942, the only son of Italian immigrants. The young Mr Serra studied Engineering and also participated in student union activities, having fled to Bolivia and Chile, and then France, returning to Brazil in the late seventies when democracy was restored. He then became a Congressman, Senator, São Paulo State Governor and then Minister for Health. He is married to Mônica Serra and they have two children.

Famous World Songs 1 / Músicas Famosas do Mundo 1

Today I shall be looking at what I consider to be one of the greatest songs of all time, with the unique distinction of having been sung by both sides in the same war. I am talking, of course, about that great love ballad “Lili Marlene” – in the original German “Lili Marleen”.

The poem was originally launched in 1915 by German poet Hans Liep, a schoolteacher grudgingly drafted into the Prussian army, as an expression of the anguish of separation from his sweetheart [1]. Sensing the ominous mood of the time, with war once again brewing, Norbert Schultze, who was a famous German composer, put the poem to music. The song was first recorded by Lale Andersen but sales were very low. The song really took off after it was broadcast on Radio Belgrade after a lucky twist of fate [2]. Soon it became a fixed slot, at 21:55 every night. The German troops soon took to the song, as did the Allies, who heard it in the trenches. English versions soon followed, the most famous recordings being those of Dame Vera Lynn [see video reference below] and Anne Shelton. In the meantime, in Germany the recording by Marlene Dietrich is considered one of the best [video reference below].
Today, 70 years on, the song is considered one of the best German songs of the 20th Century [3], and is popular throughout the world, having already been translated into 48 languages, including Hebrew and Latin. Some of these, including an alternative English version, can be seen at [4], while a Brazilian version, showing some differences from the original, can be seen at [5].
When we look at the trash that some of today’s bands produce, we can just feel sorry that they don’t make songs like Lili Marlene any more…

You can hear two of the most famous versions at:
(English - Dame Vera Lynn) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqv5i_lile-marlene-british-version-vera-l_music
(German - Marlene Dietrich): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO0lUXnAs-U

Corinthians Centenary / Centenário do Corinthians

Today, 1 September, the famous Brazilian football club Corinthians commemorates its centenary. Corinthians is one of the most important Brazilian clubs and has the second largest number of supporters in Brazil, after Flamengo of Rio de Janeiro.

The story of the club started in 1910 when the famous English amateur team Corinthians FC of London came out to Brazil to play some matches against leading Brazilian teams of the time, including Flamengo and Fluminense (both still important clubs in Brazil). Among the followers of these memorable games was a group of five labourers from the São Paulo Railway, who were really impressed with the dribbles of these men from the Land of the Queen (it was actually a King in those days), to the extent that they decided to start a club of their own, the first ever football club for the masses, and call it Corinthians Paulista (Paulista means “from São Paulo State”).

From humble beginnings as just another amateur side, Corinthians grew to be one of the most popular teams in the land. Among the famous names to have worn the black and white shirts are Garrincha, Rivellino, Sócrates, Zenon, Casagrande, Carlos Tévez and also a somewhat overweight Ronaldo “Phenomenon”, also known as “The Mammoth”.

A World Language / Um Idioma Mundial

A World Language

Ever since the invention of language, one big problem facing the world has been the wide variety of languages and alphabets.

Several attempts have been found to create a world language that could bring people closer together, and one that has succeeded is Esperanto, the invention of Dr L. L. Zamenhof who grew up in the late 1800s in Warsaw (part of Russia at that time). While still in high school he set out to design a universal artificial language that would facilitate communication within his linguistically diverse community. In 1887, he published the first guide (in Russian) to the new language, which he called “Lingvo Internacia” (international language). Zamenhof wrote the textbook under the pseudonym “Esperanto,” meaning “a person who is hoping” in Lingvo Internacia. Fans of the language decided that “Esperanto” had a nicer ring to it, and they soon adopted it as the informal name of the language. (see [1]).

Different from some other languages, with their declensions, cases, silent letters and the like, Esperanto is very simple, based on 16 rules without exceptions - very different from English, as can be seen in [2] - and the stress is always in the same place. Verbs are simple, the same form for all persons and the ending remaining the same for all verbs. Better, it is extremely handy for creation of new words, for example the opposite of any concept can be expressed by adding the prefix mal- before the main word. The alphabet is familiar to most languages, the main difference being the replacement of the strešica by the circumflex accent over the c and the s.

Another blessing is the fact that word order is irrelevent, so “universala lingvo” and “lingvo universala” are exactly the same - this is not the case in Portuguese, for example, where we have “homem grande” (big man) different from “grande homem” (great man). Further information available in [3].

So go ahead, lernu Esperanton!

Translation Humour / Humor Tradutório

TRANSLATION HUMOUR

As laughter is the best remedy, here are my favourite translation-related YouTube videos. I had intended to put the videos on my blog but could not find out how to put them on, so here goes. All videos are in English. Enjoy, and have a great weekend!

1. FIVE THOUSAND WORDS

This is an excellent videoclip posted by a fellow translator (great on the guitar) showing the pressure placed on legal translators, with increasing volumes and ever-tightening deadlines. The end of the video comes as a complete surprise!

Reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9KbQyrxSIo

2. MY TRANSLATOR HASN’T TURNED UP!

The company was having a summit meeting but the translator didn’t turn up, so a substitute translator stepped in, saying she could translate into seven languages. Roar with laughter as she tries to translate for the dumbstruck executives!

3. LOST IN TRANSLATION - LJUBLJANA AIRPORT

The tourist reads the name of the airport, can’t understand what it says, and thinks he’s in the wrong airport and even in the wrong country! (Warning: The man says the f-word a few times. Do not watch if this would offend)
